Carcassonne, by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede

We’re glad to talk about one of the most famous eurogames -if not the most!

Carcassonne copia

In this game, players are builders who use wooden followers (human-shaped tokens popularly known as “meeples”) for founding cities, roads and even monasteries. They can even farm the land around the castle! As they place the tiles,  the players will build up the landscape of the stronghold town of Carcassonne, which actually exists in the South of France.

The game sequence is very simple: draw a tile from the stack, place this tile on the table within the framework of certain rules (i.e: matching the drawing of the map), place one of your meeples on the tile just placed (optional), and score points -if scoring is possible. Once the buildings are completed, players are rewarded with points that are scored during the game.  The bigger the castles/roads are the more points you get when they are completed.

However, part of the fun in this game is that you can also give your opponents a hard time by placing tiles near to their cities instead of using that tile to expand yours. This way you may make it more difficult for them to complete the buildings and score points.

At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.

For some people, it might be one of those games where the rules seem more complicated that the game actually is, and it is really worthwhile giving Carcassonne a second chance once you’ve learned to play.
